Music will save us all.
Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Melissa McCarthy, the fat one from the “Chick-Buddy-Flick” movie Bridesmaids hosts, and pseudo-pop-country trio with a band, Lady Antebellum, fills the musical guest role.
Cold Open - Lawrence Welk show - Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy are a great pair. The obvious comparisons are with David Spade and Chris Farley. The Skinny/Fat dynamic is there as well as a lot of outrageous physical comedy. It’s not an original or particularly cerebral duo (as contrasted to the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler powerhouse) but they are fucking FUNNY—and that is all I ask for as I sit alone on a Saturday night watching TV.
Internet Comments Talk Show - This skit uncovers the until-now unseen, anonymous internet trolls who leave comments under videos and blog posts. I’m always interested when SNL does one of these high technology/current culture pathology type of skits. Unfortunately, it kind of came off as one of those “So true it’s kind of sad” kind of feelings. Best line of the night: “She called “Garfield the ‘N-word’”
Lady Antebellum’s “We Owned the Night” - Apart from the way they look and move around on stage, LA actually has some pretty good songs, but WOW, pitch problems out the ass. Are you kidding me? If you are going to take the time to put gel in your hair and strategically pick out which bracelets and shirts to layer over your emo-skinny frame, why don’t you take an extra ten minutes to really digest what harmonies you are supposed to be singing. The good thing about Lady Antebellum’s fans is that THEY CAN’T HEAR THE DIFFERENCE! LA LA LA LA LA LA LAAAAA!!!!!
Weekend Update - Really great. Seth Meyers seems to just nail it every single time. The jokes are pretty good, but that’s all they really have to be as WU is a format everyone is familiar with. Keenan as Tyler Perry isn’t funny—although Tyler Perry isn’t funny anyway, so that is already a difficult role. SNL isn’t made for “difficult” roles.
Lulu Diamonds - Another SNL formula tackling a famous actress named Lulu Diamonds feature on TCM in which someone does something ridiculous and then repeats it a couple of times until it becomes even MORE ridiculous. I don’t care. It’s STILL funny. I like watching fat people fall down stairs. SO SUE ME.
